Environ 2000 résidants d’un village de la Nouvelle-Zélande ont dû être secourus à l’aide de bateaux et de tracteurs jeudi matin après qu’une rivière a défoncé une digue de ciment, inondant du même coup des centaines de bâtiments.
Les autorités de Edgecumbe, sur l’Île du Nord, ont déclaré l’état d’urgence après que la digue eut cédé. Le pays est aux prises avec les vestiges du cyclone Debbie, qui a inondé certaines parties de la côte est australienne la semaine dernière.
Le maire du district de Whakatane, Tony Bonne, a indiqué que l’eau avait grimpé jusqu’à 1 mètre dans certaines maisons et qu’une des rivières de la région avait atteint une hauteur record.
Les pluies torrentielles ont également causé d’importants dégâts dans la région d’Auckland.
